• Personal comments about my life seem mostly like blather. Very few people care about where I went to lunch on a particular day. If someone does care about that, I’m more than a bit concerned.
• I can’t talk too much about what my company is up to. Being a small business we can’t splatter our future product plans all over a blog and let our bigger competitors take advantage of that.
• Good writing is hard, and I spent a lot of time trying to write good blog posts.
• Technical material is very detailed. Getting every little detail right, so you don’t get in arguments or look like an idiot requires a lot of time.
• Blog spam takes too much time to deal with.

So what am I going to do differently this time?

• I’m going to focus on more technical material and small business/startup issues and leave the personal material out. I’m going to stick to the stuff I’m involved with day in and day out, because it makes writing the material easier.
• I’m going to talk about my company, but I’ll need to leave a lot of the details out.
• I’m going to write stream of consciousness style like every other blogger. Less editing less time.
• I’m going to worry less about the technical details and edit posts later. So if someone does find a problem, we can fix it and move on quickly.
• I’m going to turn off comments. I do want to hear from you, but you’ll have to send me email, or post it in your own blog and give me a traceback I’m still mixed about comments, I’ll leave them on and see how it goes.
• I’m going to do a better job categorizing my posts, so you can read only the ones you care about.
• I’m going to keep the posts shorter. Even if I have a monolithic topic, shorter posts are easier for me to write and easier for you to read.
• I’m going to do some experiments with mobile blogging, and richer content than just text. We’ll see how that works and whether or not it is worth the trouble.

I’m hoping that will make for some more compelling blog reading. I hope you’ll let me know.
